Our Curling Club was successful in securing a $25,000 grant from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility. The focus of the grant according to Raymond Cho, Minister for Seniors and Accessibility. “is to provide funding for so many programs that bring older people together to avoid being socially isolated, learn new skills, get fit, enjoy group activities and stay connected to their neighbours and friends.” The SCCC  was chosen because we are creating something exciting and new at the club in an arena/space that was being underutilized.

To help achieve these goals the SCC is launching two Pickleball initiatives. The first is a Free Learn to Pickleball Clinic. All you need to do is sign up and show up in your shorts and running shoe – we will have the racquets and balls. Our team will teach you all about the game – it’s easy, fun and well good exercise. Click here for full detail

The second initiative is the Summer 2024 Pickleball League. We have 2 league nights to choose from and 4 indoor courts. And once you are finished playing you can enjoy a refreshing drink in our air conditioned licensed lounge. Click here for full details

The Sydenham Curling Community Curling Club members already know how to have fun with sport and they want to share with the community this great space.  Maybe a pickleball player will become a curler. That is the ultimate goal.  To socialize, stay active, and stay remain healthy older adults.

photo curling basicsThe History of Curling

Curling has a long and rich history. While its origins are lost in the mists of time, Scottish curlers already were playing the game by the beginning of the 16th century on frozen ponds and lochs.

Their earliest equipment included stones formed by nature, each one unique. These stones often curved, or “curled,” as they slid down the ice, and the players used besoms or brooms to clear snow and debris from the path of the stones.

Present Day Curling

Today, curling is a game of strategy, finesse and strength, contested by teams generally comprised of four players. The principle of curling is simple – get your stone closer the center of the target circles, called the “house,” than your opponent. Players of all skill levels can participate and compete even at older ages than most sports allow.

Respect, honor and tradition are core elements of the game. Curlers are close knit and you can rely on a warm welcome in curling clubs throughout the world. Camaraderie among players is inherent in the sport and tradition calls for both teams to sit together after a game, discussing what was and what might have been.

Come join us!

Members are welcome to come to the Club and practice on sheets not being used during open hours.

View our Calendar to see what dates and times may have sheets that are not in use. From week to week, the availability could change so please make sure to check for the specific day you want to come in (as opposed to any "Monday"). We have provided instructions below in how to interpret the calendar.

ice calendar1
General Availability

Our leagues are defined in the calendar, (e.g. Take It Easy, Drop in Stick League, Mixed, Open, Doubles, BWL, etc..). Next to the league is the number of sheets that are being utilized. Our club has 8 curling sheets available.

In this example, you can see the following:

1. Take It Easy - uses 6 sheets
2. Drop in Stick League - uses 5 sheets
3. Mixed - uses 8 sheets

The Take it Easy league starting at 930am and ending at 1130am (hover over the event to see full event details, including end time) is utilizing 6 sheets during that time frame. This means that there are 2 free sheets available for free practice during this time.

The end time of the practice session would be the end time of the given event listed on the calendar. Ice conditions on these 2 open sheets are provided as-is. This also means that a team could book a paid practice rental on one of the open sheets.

In the case of Mixed (8) at 6pm, all sheets are being used, therefore no practice sheets are available.

ice calendar2
Ice Open

Periodically we will list Open Ice events where individual members (or teams) are welcome to come utilize the ice. This is free practice time and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Ice conditions may vary during these times but the ice is typically prepared shortly before these times of events.

You can still rent paid practice ice during these times - this will guarantee you a sheet and also guarantee your ice conditions.

ice calendar3
Ice Closed

At times you will notice items like Ice Closed, or Ice Maintenance on our calendar. These times are not available for any practice or rental sessions.

In this example, you can see that as of 530pm, 4 sheets would be available as only 4 are being used by Doubles.

ice calendar3
Unlisted Times

Times that are not listed on the calender are typically not available for free practice sessions.

For example, Ezyduz It League runs from 930am-1130am. From 1130am forward to the next listed event, the ice is typically closed. We are still able to support paid rental practices during these times.

ice guidelines warning riskWaiver Notice for All Participants

Your safety is our top priority! We want to ensure all participants have a safe and fun experience while curling at our facility. We appreciate that you take the time to read and follow these guidelines.

Guidelines

  1. We recognize that all curlers are looking for opportunities to practice throughout the year. There is many open opportunities for teams to practice - many of which are free to members to use. Free practice times are based on open-ice availability - which can either exist due to open sheets during another event (e.g. regular league play) or times listed as Open Ice on the calendar. Please keep in mind that practice ice condition can vary and is provided as-is.
  2. Members also have the ability to rent sheets for practice at a discounted rate of $35+tax. Typically practice sessions are scheduled for 90 minutes but larger increments can be requested based on availibility. Rented practice ice is prepared for you shortly before your practice session begins which will guarantee you with appropriate ice conditions.
  3. Looking to book ice time? To help you determine when free ice is available, you need to understand how to read our Ice Calendar.

The Sydenham Curling Club hosts a number of bonspiels and funspiels throughout the season giving curlers the opportunity to compete at their level, while celebrating our Club and the greater curling community. From one day spiels, to stick spiels and full weekend events, we have something for everyone!

If you've never been to a Sydenham Curling Club bonspiel before, we feature various divisions so curlers of differing skill levels can compete at their own level and still win prizes! You don't have to be a pro - you just have to love curling and a great time! We'll see you on the ice!

Please review our bonspiel offerings below for the season. Good curling!

Please Note: Registration deadlines will be listed when they become available along with a link to register your team. However, some of these spiels are very popular and tend to sell out quickly, so do not delay in registering or you may be disappointed!

FWCC Spare Information & Policies

Please keep in mind these policies are meant for FWCC house leagues (e.g. Open & Mixed). To be eligible to play as a spare for a team you must meet one of the following criteria.

  • You have paid a single game, $10 (includes tax) spare rate, prior to the game you are sparing in. Payment can be made at the bar.
  • You are a Fifth Man member of the club in good standing.
  • You are a Full Time Open (2 nights a week) member of the club in good standing

Please Note: If you are a Full Time Open (1 night a week), Mixed or Stick member of the club in good standing, you are allowed to periodically spare for teams at no cost with limitations. Spares are meant to be occasional replacements when a member of a team is not able to play. Continually sparing for teams on a regular basis will require you to pay $10 per game to spare, or require an upgrade to your membership.

Open League Spare Usage

A paid fifth man membership spare can play in any position when sparing. However, any other spares must play in either the lead or second position unless otherwise agreed by both teams.
