Announcing Engagement Tour

To our CurlON community,

After two and a half months into my role as the Executive Director at CurlON, I am excited about our potential as an industry and the future of CurlON. Over the last two months, I have been focused on understanding our landscape and operations behind the organization.

A major commitment of mine, our board of directors, and our staff, is a new mindset of listening and engagement with YOU! Whether you are a coach, competitor, club curler, or beyond, it is important for us to hear from you.

We are excited to announce a Virtual Engagement Tour with all our stakeholders. During the week of December 11-15 and January 15-19, you are invited to book a one on one session with myself to discuss all matters CurlON. We want to hear what we are doing well, where we need to improve, and what you need from us as an organization. The growth and future of CurlON and curling in Ontario starts with each of us. It is my hope you will take part in this Engagement Tour and provide us with your direction for curling in Ontario.

Please note, member clubs and their boards have also received a separate invitation for a similar session from a club level. If you are a club manager or board member, we encourage you to reach out to your board chair or club manager for more details.

I look forward to meeting with all of you and being part of the collective growth and success of CurlON and curling in Ontario.

Behind the Scenes: The Art of Preparing Perfect Curling Ice

As the crisp air signals the start of the curling season, the Sydenham Community Curling Club (SCCC) becomes a hive of activity, with the artful preparation of our curling ice underway. At the heart of this operation is Doug Teeter, our esteemed Ice Technician, whose dedication to crafting the perfect ice is unmatched.

Doug’s expertise in ice making is complemented by a team of hardworking volunteers, each contributing to the meticulous process that goes into creating the best possible playing surface. These volunteers are the unsung heroes who work tirelessly, ensuring every inch of the ice meets the highest standards.

Preparing curling ice is an art that goes beyond a simple freeze. It’s a deliberate process that requires an understanding of the science behind temperature, water purity, and the precise pebbling technique that gives our ice its superior quality. From the initial flood to the final pebble, Doug, alongside the team of volunteers, oversees each step with an artisan’s precision.

This year is particularly special for SCCC as we celebrate 60 years of curling. It’s a legacy built on the shoulders of those who have dedicated countless hours to perfecting our rink. The vibrant houses painted on the ice, the straight lines guiding strategy and skill, and the textured surface all reflect the commitment to excellence shared by Doug and his team.

The ice at SCCC is more than a playing field; it’s a testament to the spirit of camaraderie and community that defines our club. As our members step onto the ice, every slide and sweep is supported by the foundation laid by Doug and the volunteers.

As we welcome members old and new to another season of competition and fellowship, let us acknowledge and celebrate the tireless efforts of Doug Teeter and all the volunteers. Their behind-the-scenes work is what enables us to enjoy the sport we love.

Here’s to the smooth glides, the precise shots, and the roaring game — all played on the ice that is a product of passion, expertise, and collective effort.
